How we actually diagnose it
A heat pump has parts an AC and a furnace don’t — a reversing valve and a defrost cycle — which means more ways to fail and more ways to be misdiagnosed. So we measure: refrigerant superheat and subcooling, temperature split across the coil, compressor and fan amp draw, and the defrost sequence in real time. That’s how we tell a stuck reversing valve from a low charge from a bad defrost board — instead of replacing a $1,500 compressor that was never the problem. It runs year-round and does two jobs through one reversing circuit — failure modes a furnace or straight AC simply doesn’t have.

Not every heat pump is worth fixing, and we’ll tell you when it isn’t. The call comes down to age (most run 12–15 years), the specific repair cost against a new system, and refrigerant — older R-410A units get pricier to service as it’s phased down.
